Team Development

Teams are about the interaction between people, problems and perspective.

COGDELL consulting Asia Pacific offers a practical approach to developing a self-directed and collaborative team culture that is anchored in learning organisation principles using a well regarded range of learning organisation tools such as the advocacy and enquiry matrix, the ladder of inference and systems thinking maps. We are licensed to use the highly regarded Team Management SystemsTM tools and offer customised workshops that ensure teams are strategically focused, share knowledge, leverage difference and are continuous improvement driven.  Team Management Wheel - Advisors, Explorers, Organisers

The complexity of the challenges organisations face today demand the collective contribution of a range of people with deep know how rather than just one expert. Teams are a necessary response to these complex challenges and they may take many forms: execuitve, functional, project, cabin crew, communities of practice, etc. This new work environment requires people to be able to manage the conflicting demands of being a member of several teams and handle the ambiguity of different reporting relationships. We are in a world of "collaborative individualism". The emphasis has shifted from developing team leaders to developing self-directed leadership capabilities in team members.

We help teams identify the balance between the types of work that must be do in a high performing team and the types of people that are in the team by using the Team Management Resources Types of Work profile and the Team Preferences profile (see Team Management SystemsTM Model opposite).

We get the team to confirm its purpose by considering the three R's of performance - results (meet management/resourcer expectations), reputation (meet customer/client expectations) and retention (meet team member expectations). This triadic challenge needs to be in balance in a healthy high performing team.

QO2 Diagram

We work with you and your team to understand the team's capacity for change by considering the balance of energy on obstacles and opportunities that the people in the team use to address the issues in the team's context or environment using the Team Management Resources QO2 tool (shown opposite)

The QO2 looks at five behavioural dimensions:

  •       MTG (Moving Towards Goals) Energy
  •       Multi-pathways
  •       Optimism
  •       Fault-finding
  •       Time Focus

and it is a complimentary fifth dimension to the four dimensions of the Team Management Profile and is especially useful in managing and implementing change in a team context.

We enable the team to develop a learning climate by considering the barriers to team learning and knowledge sharing and by developing an understanding of the relationship between the actual team context and the ideal capabilities of the team.
